[IBC] Shimpaku
I just made up a mallsai of a small Shimpaku for a silent auction. I'm
planning to add a beginner's book, but can anyone point me to an article on growing
Shimpaku bonsai? The only one I found, from Sabrina Caine, has too many
errors.

Iris: Why not just direct them to the beginner bonsai class on
juniper produced by Herb Gustafson for the IBC site?

And if you know of errors in Sabrina's article, maybe you should
send an errata sheet to BCI (Alan????) so someone can do a
corrected version. I'm sure BCI wan'ts accurate info.
The "beginner's beginner's book" (and cheap!) is DK Books' "101
Essential Tips: Bonsai" which only costs $5.00 and packs a LOT
of concise info into 72 shirt-pocket-sized pages. It's by Harry
Tomlinson.

Sorry, I have too many other things I have to do. And I don't know enough
about Shimpaku myself.
The auction package will include a beginner's book, but I wanted to include
an article specifically about Shimpaku.

I repot mine in the first week of Jan. For you I would aim for after
the worst of the cold is passed but while some cool weather remains.
For me repeating any Juniper this time of year is almost always fatal.

Re: [IBC] Shimpaku
Good example of regional differences. In the San Francisco Bay Area we do Junipers in October/ November and they do great. If we wait until January, they are not as stable.

Re: [IBC] Shimpaku
Here in Zone 4....not too far from Iris who I think is Zone 5...I prefer to
repot them
just after the ground thaws from winter. April thru May. If it is an
emergency, just
move it into a larger training pot with additional soil for now and do it
properly in spring.

I repot in the spring, sometime in March. I wouldn't do any root
pruning this time of year. If it's potbound, I would take it out of the
pot with the root ball intact and pot up in a larger nursery pot and
then repot next spring.
